Web3Caff Research, a Web3 industry research and analysis platform, recently released an in-depth research report on the seven derivative dominant narratives of modular blockchain. In the report, Uweb partner and Web3Caff Research guest researcher Jun Fang points out that Web3 infrastructure is becoming fully modular, a trend often referred to as the so-called 'modular blockchain' This trend is often referred to as “modular blockchain,” and it is the most fundamental building block of the future multi-chain world. The best place to start discussing modularity is Ether. Ether's scaling is centered around Rollup, which is typified by the proliferation of L2. Ether L2 has created the need for middleware layers such as DA, Rollup framework, shared sequencers, interoperability, ZK proof services, and so on. Previously, modular blockchain discussions have focused on the Rollup framework or DA layer, so this research paper tries to take a larger view to get a bird's eye view. From the starting point of Ether, the modular blockchain grand narrative is derived into seven narratives (Ether, DA, Rollup, Cosmos, BTC L2, Middleware, ZK).

The report further states that it is reasonable to observe the modularity of Web3 infrastructure from the center of Ether. First, the technical infrastructure that underpins Web3 applications is almost exclusively the model first proposed by EtherCenter, i.e., the 'Smart Contract Platform'. Second, the mainstream trend of modularization is to break down Ether as a single blockchain into numerous modules, innovate and replace them, and combine them again. Third, important technologies such as VM, DA, account abstraction, Rollup, and ZK are mainly developed in the Ether ecosystem. Fourth, the Ether and EVM-compatible ecosystem is already well established and dominant, and most applications will choose to extend the path outward from it. This discussion will help us recognize the emerging base chains (especially Rollup, BTC L2, etc.), horizontal layers (such as DA layer, pledge/re-pledge layer, ZK proof network, etc.), and also assist you in predicting new hotspots that may emerge.

The report also points out that the ethereum ecosystem, especially EVM, is still fully dominant; although many L2 chains have already emerged, horizontal layers may be more interesting; the BTC L2 ecosystem will develop rapidly, mainly due to the need to utilize BTC as an asset; and new technological directions are still emerging, with the most noteworthy being ZK.
